Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Ross Finnie MSP has urged NHS Boards across Scotland to use effective workforce planning tools to deal with the difficult financial pressures they are facing.
NHS workforce planning figures out today show the number of midwives and nurses across Scotland has fallen by 548 over the last year.
Commenting Mr Finnie said:
"Liberal Democrats understand that NHS Boards are facing considerable financial pressures at the moment.
"But nurses and midwives have vital responsibilities at the forefront of NHS care, so patients will wonder why this SNP Government has let numbers fall by 548 since last year.
"Much can be done to cut waste and high pay in the NHS to protect these vital services, like maintaining the numbers of nurses and midwives in Scottish hospitals.
"It's essential the Health Secretary gets workforce planning right if frontline services are to be preserved."
