Statistics released today by the Scottish Government reveal that teacher numbers are plummeting in Scotland.
Since 2009, the number of teachers in Scottish schools has decreased by 796. In all schools, teacher numbers have decreased since last year.
The statistics also reveal the pupil to teacher ratio has increased across many local authorities.
Commenting Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith MSP said:
"Teachers, parents and pupils are bitterly disappointed at the mess the SNP has made of Scottish education.
"Since coming to office in 2007, the SNP have continually failed on their education promises.
"They have not only haemorrhaged teachers but they have changed their pledge on class sizes to fit in with their own figures.
"Scottish education is facing significant challenges in the face of tough financial times and parents and teachers deserve answers from the Cabinet Secretary on how he is ensuring children get the best start.
"The pupil to teacher ratio is going in the wrong direction. Liberal Democrats want to improve this ratio. That will make a real difference to the quality of classroom education.
"The Scottish Government must raise their game on education."
