Commenting on the comparison between the 2008 health surveys of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, Liberal Democrat Public Health spokesperson Jamie Stone MSP said:
"These comparisons make for grim reading for Scotland.
"These comparisons show that we eat less fruit and veg and we drink and smoke more.
"It's really not surprising that Scottish overweight and obesity rates are higher than England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
"Given that 1 in 5 primary school children are already classed as overweight, this problem is only going to get bigger.
"The Scottish Government has to tackle the root causes of obesity. That means improving diets and getting more Scots active.
"Scotland doesn't have to be the sick man of the UK."
