Tomorrow local MP Willie Rennie will be lending a helping hand at a Dunfermline Cancer Research UK charity shop to help raise awareness about cancer and the good work of Cancer Research UK.

It is estimated that 1 in 3 people in Fife will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime. Recent figures from Cancer Research UK show that of cancers which affect both sexes, men are 60% more likely to develop the disease and 70% more likely to die from it.

Willie commented; "I doubt that anybody in Scotland has been unaffected by cancer. Be it a relative, friend, colleague or indeed themselves, we can probably all think of at least one person who has developed this disease.

"The work of Cancer Research UK into exploring how to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer is outstanding and deserves our full support.

"I hope that by helping out in the shop I can draw attention, particularly amongst men, to cancer and encourage everyone to be aware of the symptoms. I also hope I can encourage people to donate to the shop and help support the charity in its research."

Heather Latimer, manager of the Cancer Research UK shop on Dunfermline High Street said: "We're really grateful to Willie for popping in and lending a hand. We have a fantastic team of volunteers here but are always interested in hearing from anyone who might be able to give up some of their time to volunteer with us. There is always work to be done, and even just a few hours a week helps enormously.

"Volunteering is rewarding in so many ways. It's a great way to meet people, have fun and learn new skills. Working in a shop is just one way to volunteer at Cancer Research UK, and the best thing is that all our volunteers really are helping to beat cancer by supporting the work of more than 4,250 scientists, doctors and nurses across the UK."
